About

I’m Francis Miller and I have set up this website for two reasons.

Firstly I’ve found many of my own learning experiences unsatisfactory and have wanted for a while to explore ways of making learning more effective.

Secondly there are a range of ideas that I wanted to bring together and look at in more detail.

These include:

  • new learnings about how psychological states affect performance
  • the strategies suggested by the concept of deliberate practice in building up skills
  • the developments in neuroscience and the light they shine on effective learning
  • the concepts of instructional design
  • the ideas of Kathy Sierra about creating passionate and awesome users
  • new understandings about how information can best be presented and structured.

I have been a business consultant for over 10 years and my experience previous to that included:

  • being one of the four founders of the first environmental unit trust in the UK
  • doing management consultancy work for the Falkland Islands Government
  • setting up a small publishing company
  • writing articles for various publications, including two national ones
  • developing strategy for businesses and non-profit organisations.

I graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge. Currently I live in London.
